Northumbrian Water commits to eradicating water poverty
Northumberland Water

Northumbrian Water Group (which includes both Northumbrian Water and Essex and Suffolk Water) has committed to eradicating water poverty across it’s supply chain by 2030.

Water poverty refers to people who spend more than 3% of their income on their water bill, after housing costs.

Launched at a Parliamentary reception attended by MPs and key figures from the water industry on Tuesday 22nd May, Northumbrian Water Group aims to lift 400,000 customers from water poverty.

While there is already a number of schemes available for those who need help paying their water bills, Ofwat estimates that only 10% of customers that are struggling with their bills currently receive help via a social tariff.

Northumbrian Water Group’s new approach to the problem will focus on multiple causes of water poverty, rather than limit the response to only introducing new tariffs.

This approach was developed after consultation with Northumbrian Water Group’s own customers to ensure services are available and affordable to all.

Heidi Mottram, Chief Executive of Northumbrian Water Group said: “Every day we strive harder to give better service, and our customers tell us, that improving their ability to afford our services is one of the most important ways we can help them.”

“I am very proud to announce a long-term commitment to our customers that we believe will deliver the chance to change their lives for the better”.
