In England & Wales, since 2014, the Monitoring Certification Scheme (MCERTS) has been in place for environmental permit holders who produce potentially harmful emissions.
The scheme is intended to assure regulators, industry and the wider public that the data gathered and reviewed for environmental monitoring is accurate and trustworthy. Compliance with MCERTS ensures that all regulations are adhered to and that the environment is protected.
Most Event Duration Monitoring (EDM) is likely to be subject to MCERTS standards, which specify minimum requirements for EDM installs, including the frequency of data collection.
When choosing a supplier for your EDM solutions MCERTS compliance is an important factor to consider, as the costs of non-compliance can be significant.
Intelligens WW – The heart of your EDM monitoring system
At HWM we have designed a variety of flexible monitoring systems that support wastewater companies in meeting their EDM responsibilities and at the heart of these systems is the Intelligens WW data logger.
Intelligens WW is our battery-powered ATEX-certified, multi-channel data logger that has been engineered for compatibility and versatility. Safe for use in explosive environments, Intelligens WW is an ideal data logging solution for EDM and Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO), storm drains, storage tanks and flood warning systems.
Intelligens WW is IP68 rated and benefits from two-way communications, meaning it can be programmed remotely.
Intelligens WW requires no mains power. Power is provided for 3rd party sensors by adding a ATEX-certified battery pack. Battery packs are quick and easy to connect, meaning that they can be changed as part of regular MCERTS maintenance which will save money by negating the need for additional site visits.
These features make Intelligens WW perfect for fit-and-forget applications in both hazardous and remote locations.
3.2.3 – The EDM shall indicate the discharge status (discharge or no-discharge), or the water level (or both) at 2-minute intervals (1)
A key requirement for MCERTS compliance is the ability of your monitoring solution to record data at two-minute intervals, with each value being date and time stamped. Intelligens WW meets both requirements, supporting the two-minute log rate with date and time stamping.
An additional feature, that is especially beneficial for EDM, is the ability of Intelligens to dial-in and deliver data every hour. This function is powered by an additional battery pack, with hourly dial-in supporting communication resilience and delivering the data to power customer-facing platforms.
Gathering accurate data is critical, but so is ensuring that the data is transmitted and received reliably; and you can have confidence in data transfer with Intelligens. Featuring our fully-roaming modems and replaceable SIMs, Intelligens will automatically locate the strongest possible NB-IoT, or LTE-M signal to securely transmit your data.
Intelligens also includes a 2G fallback that automatically engages should an NBIoT or LTE_M signal not be available for any reason. This back-up option ensures that your data gets delivered consistently, avoiding data gaps and any resulting financial penalties.
Additionally, Intelligens WW has built in storage for up to 2 million readings, so in the very unlikely event of data transmission issues, you can be confident that your data is securely stored.
3.2.18 – If a non-contact EDM is located where it is likely to become submerged and cannot reliably transmit a signal and receive the reflection from the water surface, the operator fit a second, contact EDM to confirm that the water level is exceeding the overflow level(1)
Engineered specifically for flexibility, Intelligens WW is compatible with a wide variety of sensors. For Event Duration Monitoring, our range of radar and ultrasonic sensors are interchangeable making it a cost-effective option for various applications.
Being a multi-channel data logger, Intelligens can significantly improve the options for data redundancy. Pairing a non-contact HWM sensor like SonicSens or RadarSens with a pressure transducer (PT), or similar that is always submerged, provides an alternative source of data which will help guarantee data redundancy and guard against penalties for incomplete data.
Intelligens is compatible with a significant number of third-party sensors (including Vega and Siemens MCERTS level sensors). By installing the Intelligens logger and external interface + power pack (ESIB), you can deploy the most effective sensor combinations for your network in an economical way.
U_MON3 and U_MON4
As specified in PR19, wastewater treatment plants are required to monitor flow to full treatment (FFT) to achieve MCERTS compliance. Our Intelligens WW led solution meets the U_MON3 and U_MON4 monitoring requirements needed for conformity, ensuring a reliable MCERTS compliant system.
